The Lectionary According to the Common Calendar

Psalm 34

1 I will bless the LORD at all times;
His praise shall continually be in my mouth.
2 My soul shall make her boast in the LORD;
the humble shall hear thereof and be glad.
3 O magnify the LORD with me,
and let us exalt His name together.

4 I sought the LORD, and He heard me,
and delivered me from all my fears.
5 They looked unto Him and were lightened,
and their faces were not ashamed.
6 This poor man cried, and the LORD heard him,
and saved him out of all his troubles.
7 The angel of the LORD encampeth round about them that fear Him,
and delivereth them.

8 O taste and see that the LORD is good;
blessed is the man that trusteth in Him!
9 O fear the LORD, ye His saints!
For them that fear Him suffer no want.
10 The young lions lack and suffer hunger,
but they that seek the LORD shall not want any good thing.

11 Come, ye children, hearken unto me;
I will teach you the fear of the LORD.
12 What man is he that desireth life,
and loveth many days, that he may see good?
13 Keep thy tongue from evil,
and thy lips from speaking guile.
14 Depart from evil and do good;
seek peace and pursue it.

15 The eyes of the LORD are upon the righteous,
and His ears are open unto their cry.
16 The face of the LORD is against them that do evil,
to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth.
17 The righteous cry, and the LORD heareth,
and delivereth them out of all their troubles.
18 The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart,
and saveth such as are of a contrite spirit.

19 Many are the afflictions of the righteous,
but the LORD delivereth him out of them all.
20 He keepeth all his bones;
not one of them is broken.
21 Evil shall slay the wicked,
and they that hate the righteous shall be desolate.
22 The LORD redeemeth the soul of His servants,
and none of them that trust in Him shall be desolate.

Luke 12:35-48

35 "Let your loins be girded about and your lights burning; 36 and ye yourselves like unto men that wait for their lord when he will return from the wedding, that when he cometh and knocketh, they may open unto him immediately. 37 Blessed are those servants whom the lord, when he cometh, shall find watching. Verily I say unto you, that he shall gird himself and make them to sit down to meat, and will come forth and serve them. 38 And if he shall come in the second watch, or come in the third watch and find them so, blessed are those servants. 39 And this know, that if the master of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched and not have suffered his house to be broken into. 40 Be ye therefore ready also, for the Son of Man cometh at an hour when ye think not."

41 Then Peter said unto Him, "Lord, speakest Thou this parable unto us, or even to all?" 42 And the Lord said,

"Who then is that faithful and wise steward, whom his lord shall make ruler over his household, to give them their portion of meat in due season? 43 Blessed is that servant whom his lord, when he cometh, shall find so doing. 44 In truth I say unto you, that he will make him ruler over all that he hath. 45 But if that servant say in his heart, `My lord delayeth his coming,' and shall begin to beat the menservants and maidens, and to eat and drink and be drunken, 46 the lord of that servant will come in a day when he looketh not for him, and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him asunder and will appoint him his portion with the unbelievers. 47 And that servant, who knew his lord's will and prepared not himself, neither did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes. 48 But he that knew not and committed things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall much be required; and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more.

1 Timothy 3:8-16

8 Likewise must the deacons be serious, not doubletongued, not given to much wine, not greedy for filthy lucre, 9 holding the mystery of the faith with a pure conscience. 10 And let these also first be proved; then, being found blameless, let them make use of the office of a deacon. 11 So also must their wives be serious, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things.

12 Let each deacon be the husband of one wife, ruling his children and his own house well. 13 For those who have ministered the office of deacon well purchase for themselves a good standing and great boldness in the faith, which is in Christ Jesus.

14 These things I write unto thee, hoping to come unto thee shortly, 15 but if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou ought to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth. 16 And beyond controversy, great is the mystery of godliness:

God was manifest in the flesh,
justified in the Spirit,
seen by angels,
preached unto the Gentiles,
believed on in the world,
received up into glory.

Isaiah 14:12-20, 26-27, 30-32

12 "How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning!
How art thou cut down to the ground, who didst weaken the nations!
13 For thou hast said in thine heart, `I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God;
I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north.
14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds;
I will be like the Most High.'
15 Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell,
to the sides of the pit.
16 They that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee and consider thee, saying,
`Is this the man that made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdoms,
17 that made the world as a wilderness and destroyed the cities thereof,
that opened not the house of his prisoners?'
18 All the kings of the nations, even all of them, lie in glory,
every one in his own house.
19 But thou art cast out of thy grave like an abominable branch,
and as the raiment of those that are slain,
thrust through with a sword, that go down to the stones of the pit,
as a carcass trodden under feet.
20 Thou shalt not be joined with them in burial, because thou hast destroyed thy land and slain thy people.
The seed of evildoers shall never be renowned.

26 This is the purpose that is purposed upon the whole earth,
and this is the hand that is stretched out upon all the nations.
27 For the LORD of hosts hath purposed,
and who shall disannul it?
And His hand is stretched out,
and who shall turn it back?

30 And the firstborn of the poor shall feed,
and the needy shall lie down in safety;
and I will kill thy root with famine,
and he shall slay thy remnant.
31 Howl, O gate! Cry, O city!
Thou, whole Philistia art dissolved!
For there shall come from the north a smoke,
and none shall be alone in his appointed times."

32 What shall one then answer the messengers of the nation?
"That the LORD hath founded Zion, and the poor of His people shall trust in it."

Words of Wisdom - Proverbs 22:4

come riches and honor and life.
