The Lectionary According to the Common Calendar

Psalm 48

1 Great is the LORD and greatly to be praised
in the city of our God, on the mountain of His holiness.

2 Beautiful in situation, the joy of the whole earth is Mount Zion;
on the sides of the north, the city of the great King.
3 God is known in her palaces as a refuge.

4 For lo, the kings were assembled,
they passed by together.
5 They saw it and so they marveled;
they were troubled and hastened away.
6 Fear took hold upon them there, and pain as of a woman in travail;
7 Thou breakest the ships of Tarshish with an east wind.
8 As we have heard, so have we seen in the city of the LORD of hosts, in the city of our God:
God will establish it for ever.

9 We have thought of Thy lovingkindness, O God,
in the midst of Thy temple.
10 According to Thy name, O God, so is Thy praise unto the ends of the earth;
Thy right hand is full of righteousness.

11 Let Mount Zion rejoice!
Let the daughters of Judah be glad because of Thy judgments!
12 Walk about Zion and go round about her,
count the towers thereof;
13 mark ye well her bulwarks, consider her palaces,
that ye may tell it to the generation that follows.
14 For this God is our God for ever and ever;
He will be our guide even unto death.

Luke 17:20-37

20 And when the Pharisees had demanded of Him when the Kingdom of God should come, He answered them and said,

"The Kingdom of God cometh not with outward show. 21 Neither shall they say, 'Lo, it is here!' or 'Lo, it is there!' For behold, the Kingdom of God is within you."

22 And He said unto the disciples, "The days will come when ye shall desire to see one of the days of the Son of Man, and ye shall not see it. 23 And they shall say to you, `See, here!' or `See, there!' Go not after them, nor follow them. 24 For as the lightning that lighteneth one part under heaven shineth unto the other part under heaven, so shall also the Son of Man be in His day. 25 But first must He suffer many things and be rejected by this generation. 26 And as it was in the days of Noah, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of Man: 27 They ate, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all.

28 "Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot: They ate, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they built; 29 but the same day that Lot went out of Sodom, it rained fire and brimstone from heaven and destroyed them all. 30 "Even thus shall it be in the Day when the Son of Man is revealed. 31 In that Day, he that shall be upon the housetop, and his goods in the house, let him not come down to take them away. And he that is in the field, let him likewise not return back. 32 Remember Lot's wife. 33 Whosoever shall seek to save his life shall lose it, and whosoever shall lose his life shall preserve it. 34 I tell you, in that night there shall be two men in one bed; the one shall be taken, and the other shall be left. 35 Two women shall be grinding together; the one shall be taken, and the other left. 36 Two men shall be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left."

37 And they answered and said unto Him, "Where, Lord?" And He said unto them,

"Wheresoever the body is, thither will the eagles be gathered together."

2 Timothy 3:10-17

10 But thou hast fully known my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, charity, patience, 11 persecutions, afflictions which came unto me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra -- what persecutions I endured. But out of them all, the Lord delivered me. 12 Yea, and all who will live a godly life in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution. 13 But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived.

14 But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing from whom thou hast learned them, 15 and that from childhood thou hast known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly equipped for all good works.

Isaiah 59:15-21

15 Yea, truth faileth,
and he that departeth from evil maketh himself a prey.
And the LORD saw it,
and it displeased Him that there was no judgment.

16 And he saw that there was no man,
and wondered that there was no intercessor;
therefore his arm brought salvation unto Him,
and his righteousness, it sustained Him.
17 For He put on righteousness as a breastplate,
and a helmet of salvation upon His head;
and he put on the garments of vengeance for clothing,
and was clad with zeal as a cloak.
18 According to their deeds, accordingly He will repay,
fury to His adversaries, recompense to His enemies; to the islands He will repay recompense.
19 So shall they fear the name of the LORD from the west
and His glory from the rising of the sun.
When the enemy shall come in like a flood,
the Spirit of the LORD shall lift up a standard against him.

20 "And the Redeemer shall come to Zion,
and unto them that turn from transgression in Jacob," saith the LORD.
21 "As for me, this is my covenant with them,"
saith the LORD;
"My spirit that is upon thee,
and My words which I have put in thy mouth, shall not depart out of thy mouth,
nor out of the mouth of thy seed, nor out of the mouth of thy seed's seed,"
saith the LORD, "from henceforth and for ever."

Words of Wisdom - Ecclesiasticus 30:16

There are no riches above a sound body,
and no joy above the joy of the heart.
