The Lectionary
According to the Common Calendar
Psalm 30
1 I will extol Thee, O LORD, for Thou hast lifted me
up,
and hast not made my foes to rejoice over me.
2 O LORD my God, I cried unto Thee,
and Thou hast healed me.
3 O LORD, Thou hast brought up my soul from the grave;
Thou hast kept me alive, that I should not go down to the pit.
4 Sing unto the LORD, O ye His saints,
and give thanks at the remembrance of His holiness.
5 For His anger endureth but a moment, and in His favor is life;
weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.
6 And in my prosperity I said,
"I shall never be moved."
7 LORD, by Thy favor Thou hast made my mountain to stand strong;
when Thou didst hide Thy face, I was troubled.
8 I cried to Thee, O LORD;
and unto the LORD I made supplication:
9 "What profit is there in my blood, when I go down to the pit?
Shall the dust praise Thee? Shall it declare Thy truth?
10 Hear, O LORD, and have mercy upon me;
LORD, be Thou my helper!"
11 Thou hast turned for me my mourning into dancing;
Thou hast put off my sackcloth and girded me with gladness,
12 to the end that my glory may sing praise to Thee and not be
silent.
O LORD my God, I will give thanks unto Thee for ever.
Luke 11:29-36
29 And when the people were gathered thick together, He began to say,
"This is an evil generation. They seek a
sign, and there shall no sign be given it, but the sign of Jonah the prophet.
30 For as Jonah was a sign unto the Ninevites, so shall also the Son of Man be
to this generation. 31 The queen of the south shall rise up in the Judgment
with the men of this generation and condemn them, for she came from the utmost
parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and behold, a greater than
Solomon is here. 32 The men of Nineveh shall rise up in the Judgment with this
generation and shall condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah;
and behold, a greater than Jonah is here.
33 "No man, when he hath lighted a
candle, putteth it in a secret place, neither under a bushel, but on a
candlestick, that they that come in may see the light. 34 The light of the
body is the eye. Therefore, when thine eye is single, thy whole body also is
full of light. But when thine eye is evil, thy body also is full of darkness.
35 Take heed therefore that the light which is in thee be not darkness. 36 If
thy whole body therefore be full of light, having no part dark, the whole
shall be full of light, as when the bright shining of a candle doth give thee
light."
2 Thessalonians 3:13-18
13 But ye, brethren, be not weary in well-doing. 14 And
if any man obey not our word in this epistle, note that man and have no
company with him, that he may be ashamed. 15 Yet count him not as an
enemy, but admonish him as a brother.
16 Now the Lord of peace Himself give you peace always
by all means. The Lord be with you all.
17 This salutation of Paul is with mine own hand, which
is the token in every epistle: so I write.
18 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you
all.
Amen.
Isaiah 9:2-9
2 The people that walked in darkness have seen a great
light;
they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light
shined.
3 Thou hast multiplied the nation and not increased the joy;
they joy before Thee according to the joy in harvest, and as men rejoice
when they divide the spoil.
4 For Thou hast broken the yoke of his burden and the staff of his shoulder,
the rod of his oppressor, as in the day of Midian.
5 For every battle of the warrior is with confused noise and garments rolled
in blood,
but this shall be with burning and fuel of fire.
6 For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given;
and the government shall be upon His shoulder.
And His name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The Mighty God,
The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
7 Of the increase of His government and peace there shall be no end,
upon the throne of David and upon His Kingdom,
to order it and to establish it with judgment and with justice from
henceforth even for ever.
The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.
8 The Lord sent a word into Jacob,
and it hath lighted upon Israel.
9 And all the people shall know--
even Ephraim and the inhabitant of Samaria-- that say in the pride and
stoutness of heart:
