The Lectionary According to the Common Calendar

Baruch 3:9-19

9 Hear, Israel, the commandments of life;
give ear to understand wisdom.
10 How happeneth it Israel, that thou art in thine enemies' land,
that thou art waxed old in a strange country,
that thou art defiled with the dead,
11 that thou art counted with them that go down into the grave?
12 Thou hast forsaken the fountain of wisdom;
13 for if thou hadst walked in the way of God, thou shouldest have dwelled in peace for ever.
14 Learn where is wisdom, where is strength, where is understanding,
that thou mayest know also where is length of days and life, where is the light of the eyes and peace.
15 Who hath found out her place?
Or who hath come into her treasuries?
16 Where are the princes of the heathen come,
and such as ruled the beasts upon the earth-
17 they that had their pastime with the fowls of the air, and they that hoarded up silver and gold,
wherein men trust, and made no end of their getting?
18 For they that wrought in silver, and were so careful, and whose works are unsearchable,
19 they are vanished and gone down to the grave, and others are come up in their steads.

Luke 2:21-35

21 And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the Child, His name was called JESUS, who was so named by the angel before He was conceived in the womb.

22 And when the days of her purification according to the Law of Moses were accomplished, they brought Him to Jerusalem to present Him to the Lord 23 (as it is written in the law of the Lord: "Every male that openeth the womb shall be called holy to the Lord"), 24 and to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord: "A pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons."

25 And behold, there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon, and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel; and the Holy Ghost was upon him. 26 And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost that he should not see death before he had seen the Lord's Christ. 27 And he came by the Spirit into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for Him after the custom of the law, 28 then he took Him up in his arms, and blessed God and said,

29 "Lord, now lettest Thou Thy servant depart in peace, according to Thy word;
30 for mine eyes have seen Thy salvation,
31 which Thou hast prepared before the face of all people,
32 a light to lighten the Gentiles,
and the glory of Thy people Israel."

33 And Joseph and His mother marveled at those things which were spoken of Him. 34 And Simeon blessed them and said unto Mary His mother, "Behold, this Child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel, and for a sign which shall be spoken against 35 (yea, a sword shall pierce through thy own soul also), that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed."

Ephesians 5:1-7

1 Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children; 2 and walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given Himself for us as an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savor. 3 But fornication and all uncleanness or covetousness, let them not once be named among you, as becometh saints; 4 neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not befitting, but rather giving of thanks. 5 For this ye know: that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the Kingdom of Christ and of God. 6 Let no man deceive you with vain words, for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience. 7 Be ye not therefore partakers with them.

2 Chronicles 36:22-23

22 Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of the LORD spoken by the mouth of Jeremiah might be accomplished, the LORD stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, so that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom and put it also in writing, saying, 23 "Thus saith Cyrus king of Persia: All the kingdoms of the earth hath the LORD God of heaven given me; and He hath charged me to build Him a house in Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Who is there among you of all His people? The LORD his God be with him, and let him go up."

Words of Wisdom - Ecclesiastes 10:12-13

The words of a wise man's mouth are gracious,
but the lips of a fool will swallow himself up;
the beginning of the words of his mouth is foolishness,
and the end of his talk is mischievous madness.
