Scripture Reading for
The Lectionary According to the Common Calendar
41 While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, 42 saying,
They said unto Him, "The son of David." 43 He said unto them,
46 And no man was able to answer Him a word; neither dared any man from that day forth ask Him any more questions.
1 I speak the truth in Christ -- I lie not, my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy Ghost-- 2 that I have great heaviness and continual sorrow in my heart. 3 For I could wish that I myself were accursed from Christ for the sake of my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh, 4 who are Israelites and to whom pertaineth the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service of God, and the promises; 5 of whom are the fathers, and from whom, according to the flesh, Christ came, who is over all, God blessed for ever. Amen.
6 It is not as though the Word of God hath taken no effect. For they are not all Israel, who are of Israel; 7 neither because they are the seed of Abraham are they all children; but, "In Isaac shall thy seed be called." 8 That is, they who are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God; rather, the children of the promise are counted as the seed. 9 For this is the word of promise: "At this time will I come, and Sarah shall have a son." 10 And not only this, but when Rebecca also had conceived by one, even by our father Isaac 11 (for the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, in order that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not by works, but by Him that calleth), 12 it was said unto her, "The elder shall serve the younger." 13 As it is written: "Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated."
14 What shall we say then? Is there unrighteousness with God? God forbid! 15 For He saith to Moses,
16 So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God who showeth mercy. 17 For the Scripture saith unto Pharaoh, "Even for this same purpose have I raised thee up, that I might show My power in thee, and that My name might be declared throughout all the earth." 18 Therefore hath He mercy on whom He will have mercy, and whom He will, He hardeneth.
25 "When thou shalt beget children and children's children, and ye shall have remained long in the land, and shall corrupt yourselves, and make a graven image or the likeness of any thing, and shall do evil in the sight of the LORD thy God to provoke Him to anger, 26 I call heaven and earth to witness against you this day that ye shall soon utterly perish from off the land whereunto ye go over the Jordan to possess it; ye shall not prolong your days upon it, but shall utterly be destroyed. 27 And the LORD shall scatter you among the nations, and ye shall be left few in number among the heathen whither the LORD shall lead you. 28 And there ye shall serve gods, the work of men's hands, wood and stone, which neither see nor hear nor eat nor smell. 29 But if from thence thou shalt seek the LORD thy God, thou shalt find Him, if thou seek Him with all thy heart and with all thy soul. 30 When thou art in tribulation and all these things have come upon thee, even in the latter days, if thou turn to the LORD thy God and shalt be obedient unto His voice 31 (for the LORD thy God is a merciful God), He will not forsake thee, neither destroy thee, nor forget the covenant of thy fathers which He swore unto them.
32 "For ask now of the days that are past, which were before thee, since the day that God created man upon the earth, and ask from the one side of heaven unto the other whether there hath been any such thing as this great thing is, or hath been heard like it? 33 Did ever people hear the voice of God speaking out of the midst of the fire, as thou hast heard, and live? 34 Or hath God deigned to go and take Him a nation from the midst of another nation by temptations, by signs, and by wonders, and by war, and by a mighty hand, and by a stretched out arm, and by great terrors, according to all that the LORD your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes? 35 Unto thee it was shown, that thou mightest know that the LORD He is God: there is none else besides Him. 36 Out of heaven He made thee to hear His voice, that He might instruct thee; and upon earth He showed thee His great fire, and thou heardest His words out of the midst of the fire. 37 And because He loved thy fathers, therefore He chose their seed after them, and brought thee out in His sight with His mighty power out of Egypt 38 to drive out nations from before thee greater and mightier than thou art, to bring thee in, to give thee their land for an inheritance, as it is this day. 39 Know therefore this day, and consider it in thine heart, that the LORD He is God in heaven above and upon the earth beneath: there is none else. 40 Thou shalt keep therefore His statutes and His commandments which I command thee this day, that it may go well with thee and with thy children after thee, and that thou mayest prolong thy days upon the earth, which the LORD thy God giveth thee, for ever."
