The Lectionary According to the Common Calendar

Psalm 101

1 I will sing of mercy and judgment;
unto Thee, O LORD, will I sing.
2 I will behave myself wisely in a perfect way. O when wilt Thou come unto me?
I will walk within my house with a perfect heart.
3 I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes;
I hate the work of them that turn aside; it shall not cleave to me.
4 A froward heart shall depart from me;
I will not know a wicked person.
5 Whoso privily slandereth his neighbor, him will I cut off;
him that hath a haughty look and a proud heart will I not suffer.

6 Mine eyes shall be upon the faithful of the land, that they may dwell with me;
he that walketh in a perfect way, he shall serve me.
7 He that worketh deceit shall not dwell within my house;
he that telleth lies shall not tarry in my sight.
8 I will early destroy all the wicked of the land,
that I may cut off all wicked doers from the city of the LORD.

John 6:41-51

41 The Jews then murmured at Him, because He said, "I am the Bread which came down from Heaven." 42 And they said, "Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How is it then that he saith, `I came down from Heaven'?" 43 Jesus therefore answered and said unto them,

"Murmur not among yourselves. 44 No man can come to Me unless the Father who hath sent Me draw him; and I will raise him up at the Last Day. 45 It is written in the Prophets: `And they shall all be taught by God.' Every man therefore that hath heard and hath learned from the Father cometh unto Me. 46 Not that any man hath seen the Father, save He that is of God; He hath seen the Father. 47 Verily, verily I say unto you, He that believeth in Me hath everlasting life. 48 I am that Bread of Life. 49 Your fathers ate manna in the wilderness, and are dead. 50 This is the Bread which cometh down from Heaven, that a man may eat thereof and not die. 51 I am the living Bread which came down from Heaven. If any man eat of this Bread, he shall live for ever; and the Bread that I will give is My flesh, which I will give for the life of the world."

1 Peter 4:7-11

7 But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober and watch unto prayer. 8 And above all things, have fervent charity among yourselves, for charity shall cover the multitude of sins. 9 Use hospitality one to another without grudging. 10 As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. 11 If any man speak, let him speak according to the oracles of God. If any man minister, let him do it according to the ability which God giveth, that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

Hosea 1

1 The word of the LORD that came unto Hosea, the son of Beeri, in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash, king of Israel.

2 The beginning of the word of the LORD by Hosea: And the LORD said to Hosea, "Go, take unto thee a wife of whoredoms and children of whoredoms; for the land hath committed great whoredom, departing from the LORD." 3 So he went and took Gomer the daughter of Diblaim, who conceived and bore him a son. 4 And the LORD said unto him, "Call his name Jezreel; for in yet a little while I will avenge the blood of Jezreel upon the house of Jehu, and will cause to cease the kingdom of the house of Israel. 5 And it shall come to pass at that day, that I will break the bow of Israel in the Valley of Jezreel."

6 And she conceived again, and bore a daughter. And God said unto him, "Call her name Loruhamah [that is, Not having obtained mercy]; for I will no more have mercy upon the house of Israel, but I will utterly take them away. 7 But I will have mercy upon the house of Judah, and will save them by the LORD their God, and will not save them by bow, nor by sword, nor by battle, by horses, nor by horsemen."

8 Now when she had weaned Loruhamah, she conceived and bore a son. 9 Then said God, "Call his name Loammi [that is, Not My people], for ye are not My people, and I will not be your God. 10 Yet the number of the children of Israel shall be as the sand of the sea, which cannot be measured nor numbered; and it shall come to pass that in the place where it was said unto them, `Ye are not My people,' there it shall be said unto them, `Ye are the sons of the living God.' 11 Then shall the children of Judah and the children of Israel be gathered together, and appoint themselves one head; and they shall come up out of the land, for great shall be the day of Jezreel.

Hosea 2:1-5, 14-20

1 "Say ye unto your brethren, 'Ammi' [that is, My people], and to your sisters, `Ruhamah' [that is, Having obtained mercy].

2 "Plead with your mother, plead;
for she is not My wife, neither am I her Husband.
Let her therefore put away her whoredoms out of her sight,
and her adulteries from between her breasts,
3 lest I strip her naked and set her as in the day that she was born,
and make her as a wilderness, and set her like a dry land, and slay her with thirst.
4 And I will not have mercy upon her children,
for they are the children of whoredoms.
5 For their mother hath played the harlot;
she that conceived them hath done shamefully.
For she said, `I will go after my lovers that give me my bread and my water,
my wool and my flax, mine oil and my drink.'

14 "Therefore, behold, I will allure her,
and bring her into the wilderness, and speak comfortingly unto her.
15 And I will give her her vineyards from thence,
and the Valley of Achor for a door of hope;
and she shall sing there, as in the days of her youth,
and as in the day when she came up out of the land of Egypt.

16 "And it shall be at that day," saith the LORD, "that thou shalt call Me `Ishi' [that is, My husband], and shalt call Me no more `Baali' [that is, My Lord]. 17 For I will take away the names of the Baalim out of her mouth, and they shall no more be remembered by their name. 18 And in that day will I make a covenant for them with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of the heavens, and with the creeping things of the ground; and I will break the bow and the sword and warfare out of the earth, and will make them to lie down safely. 19 And I will betroth thee unto Me for ever; yea, I will betroth thee unto Me in righteousness, and in judgment, and in lovingkindness, and in mercies. 20 I will even betroth thee unto Me in faithfulness, and thou shalt know the LORD.

Words of Wisdom - Ecclesiasticus 36:18-19

The belly devoureth all meats,
yet is one meat better than another.
As the palate tasteth divers kinds of venison,
so doth a heart of understanding false speeches.
