The Lectionary According to the Common Calendar

Psalm 104:1-23

1 Bless the LORD, O my soul!
O LORD my God, Thou art very great; Thou art clothed with honor and majesty--
2 who coverest Thyself with light as with a garment,
who stretchest out the heavens like a curtain;
3 who layeth the beams of His chambers in the waters, who maketh the clouds His chariot,
who walketh upon the wings of the wind;
4 who maketh His angels spirits,
His ministers a flaming fire;
5 who laid the foundations of the earth,
that it should never be removed.
6 Thou covered it with the deep as with a garment;
the waters stood above the mountains.
7 At Thy rebuke they fled;
at the voice of Thy thunder they hastened away.
8 They go up by the mountains; they go down by the valleys
unto the place which Thou hast founded for them.
9 Thou hast set a boundary that they may not pass over,
that they turn not again to cover the earth.

10 He sendeth the springs into the valleys,
which run among the hills.
11 They give drink to every beast of the field;
the wild asses quench their thirst.
12 By them shall the fowls of the heavens have their habitation,
which sing among the branches.
13 He watereth the hills from His chambers;
the earth is satisfied with the fruit of Thy works.

14 He causeth the grass to grow for the cattle
and herbs for the service of man,
that he may bring forth food out of the earth,
15 and wine that maketh glad the heart of man,
and oil to make his face to shine,
and bread which strengtheneth man's heart.

16 The trees of the LORD are full of sap,
the cedars of Lebanon which He hath planted,
17 where the birds make their nests;
as for the stork, the fir trees are her house.
18 The high hills are a refuge for the wild goats,
and the rocks for the conies.

19 He appointed the moon for seasons;
the sun knoweth his time to go down.
20 Thou makest darkness, and it is night,
wherein all the beasts of the forest creep forth.
21 The young lions roar after their prey
and seek their meat from God.
22 When the sun ariseth, they gather themselves together
and lay them down in their dens.
23 Man goeth forth unto his work
and to his labor until the evening.

John 7:1-13

1 After these things, Jesus walked in Galilee, for He would not walk in Judea, because the Jews sought to kill Him. 2 Now the Jews' Feast of Tabernacles was at hand. 3 His brethren therefore said unto Him, "Depart hence and go into Judea, that thy disciples also may see the works that thou doest. 4 For no man doeth anything in secret if he himself seeketh to be known openly. If thou do these things, show thyself to the world." 5 For neither did His brethren believe in Him. 6 Then Jesus said unto them,

"My time is not yet come, but your time is always ready. 7 The world cannot hate you, but Me it hateth, because I testify of it that the works thereof are evil. 8 Go ye up unto this feast. I go not up yet unto this feast, for My time is not yet fully come."

9 When He had said these words unto them, He remained still in Galilee.

10 But when His brethren had gone up, then He also went up unto the feast, not openly but, as it were, in secret. 11 Then the Jews sought Him at the feast and said, "Where is he?" 12 And there was much murmuring among the people concerning Him. For some said, "He is a good man," and others said, "Nay, for he deceiveth the people." 13 Yet no man spoke openly of Him for fear of the Jews.

1 Peter 5:6-14

6 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, 7 casting all your cares upon Him, for He careth for you. 8 Be sober, be vigilant, because your adversary the devil walketh about as a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. 9 Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren who are in the world. 10 But after ye have suffered a while, may the God of all grace, who hath called us into His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, make you perfect, establish, strengthen, settle you. 11 To Him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

12 By Silvanus, whom I account to be a faithful brother unto you, I have written briefly, exhorting and testifying that this is the true grace of God wherein ye stand.

13 The church that is at Babylon, elected together with you, saluteth you, and so doth Mark, my son. 14 Greet ye one another with a kiss of charity. Peace be with you all who are in Christ Jesus.

Amen.

Hosea 10:1-4, 12-14

1 Israel is an empty vine;
he bringeth forth fruit unto himself.
According to the multitude of his fruit he hath increased the altars;
according to the goodness of his land they have made goodly images.
2 Their heart is divided;
now shall they be found faulty.
He shall break down their altars;
He shall despoil their images.
3 For now they shall say, "We have no king, because we feared not the LORD.
What then should a king do to us?"
4 They have spoken words, swearing falsely in making a covenant;
thus judgment springeth up as hemlock in the furrows of the field.

12 Sow to yourselves in righteousness, reap in mercy, break up your fallow ground;
for it is time to seek the LORD, till He come and rain righteousness upon you.

13 Ye have plowed wickedness, ye have reaped iniquity, ye have eaten the fruit of lies,
because thou didst trust in thy way, in the multitude of thy mighty men.
14 Therefore shall a tumult arise among thy people, and all thy fortresses shall be despoiled,
as Shalman despoiled Beth-arbel in the day of battle: the mother was dashed in pieces upon her children.

Words of Wisdom - Ecclesiasticus 37:2

Is it not a grief unto death when a companion and friend is turned to an enemy?
