The Lectionary According to the Common Calendar

Psalm 85

1 LORD, Thou hast been favorable unto Thy land;
Thou hast released the captives of Jacob.
2 Thou hast forgiven the iniquity of Thy people;
Thou hast covered all their sin.

3 Thou hast taken away all Thy wrath;
Thou hast turned Thyself from the fierceness of Thine anger.
4 Turn us, O God of our salvation,
and cause Thine anger toward us to cease.
5 Wilt Thou be angry with us for ever?
Wilt Thou draw out Thine anger to all generations?
6 Wilt Thou not revive us again,
that Thy people may rejoice in Thee?
7 Show us Thy mercy, O LORD,
and grant us Thy salvation.

8 I will hear what God the LORD will speak,
for He will speak peace unto His people and to His saints; but let them not turn again to folly.
9 Surely His salvation is nigh them that fear Him,
that glory may dwell in our land.

10 Mercy and truth are met together;
righteousness and peace have kissed each other.
11 Truth shall spring out of the earth,
and righteousness shall look down from heaven.
12 Yea, the LORD shall give that which is good,
and our land shall yield her increase.
13 Righteousness shall go before Him,
and shall set us in the way of His steps.

John 3:13-21

13 And no man hath ascended up to Heaven, but He that came down from Heaven, even the Son of Man who is in Heaven. 14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have eternal life.

16 "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.

18 "He that believeth in Him is not condemned; but He that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation: that Light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God."

James 4:1-10

1 From whence come wars and fightings among you? Do they not come even from your lusts that war in your members? 2 Ye lust, and have not; ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain. Ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not. 3 Ye ask and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts. 4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God. 5 Do ye think that the Scripture saith in vain, "The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy"? 6 But He giveth more grace; therefore He saith,

"God resisteth the proud,
but giveth grace unto the humble."

7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Draw nigh to God, and He will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners, and purify your hearts, ye doubleminded. 9 Be afflicted and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. 10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He shall lift you up.

Ezekiel 33:23-33

23 Then the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, 24 "Son of man, they that inhabit those wastes in the land of Israel speak, saying, `Abraham was one, and he inherited the land. But we are many; the land is given us for inheritance.' 25 Therefore say unto them, `Thus saith the Lord GOD: Ye eat meat with the blood, and lift up your eyes toward your idols, and shed blood. And shall ye possess the land? 26 Ye stand upon your sword, ye work abomination, and ye defile every one his neighbor's wife. And shall ye possess the land?' 27 Say thou thus unto them, `Thus saith the Lord GOD: As I live, surely they that are in the wastes shall fall by the sword, and him that is in the open field will I give to the beasts to be devoured, and they that are in the forts and in the caves shall die of the pestilence. 28 For I will lay the land most desolate, and the pomp of her strength shall cease; and the mountains of Israel shall be desolate, that none shall pass through. 29 Then shall they know that I am the LORD, when I have laid the land most desolate because of all their abominations which they have committed.'

30 "Also, thou son of man, the children of thy people still are talking against thee by the walls and in the doors of the houses, and speak one to another, every one to his brother, saying, `Come, I pray you, and hear what is the word that cometh forth from the LORD.' 31 And they come unto thee as the people cometh, and they sit before thee as My people, and they hear thy words, but they will not do them; for with their mouth they show much love, but their heart goeth after their covetousness. 32 And lo, thou art unto them as a very lovely song of one that hath a pleasant voice and can play well on an instrument; for they hear thy words, but they do them not. 33 And when this cometh to pass -- lo, it will come -- then shall they know that a prophet hath been among them."

Words of Wisdom - Ecclesiasticus 33:24

Fodder, a wand, and burdens are for the ass;
and bread, correction, and work for a servant.
