The Lectionary According to the Common Calendar

Psalm 53

1 The fool hath said in his heart, "There is no God."
They are corrupt and have done abominable iniquity; there is none that doeth good.

2 God looked down from heaven upon the children of men
to see if there were any that understood, that had sought God.
3 Every one of them has turned back; they have altogether become filthy;
there is none that doeth good, no, not one.

4 Have the workers of iniquity no knowledge--those who eat up my people as they eat bread?
They have not called upon God.
5 There they were in great fear, where no fear was;
for God hath scattered the bones of him that encampeth against thee;
thou hast put them to shame,
because God hath despised them.

6 O that the salvation of Israel might come out of Zion!
When God bringeth back His captive people, Jacob shall rejoice and Israel shall be glad.

Luke 19:1-10

1 And Jesus entered and passed through Jericho. 2 And behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus who was the chief among the publicans, and he was rich. 3 And he sought to see Jesus, who He was, but could not for the press of the crowd, because he was short in stature. 4 And he ran ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see Him, for He was to pass that way. 5 And when Jesus came to the place, He looked up and saw him, and said unto him,

"Zacchaeus, make haste and come down, for today I must abide at thy house."

6 And he made haste and came down, and received Him joyfully. 7 And when they saw it, they all murmured, saying that He had gone to be the guest of a man who was a sinner. 8 And Zacchaeus stood and said unto the Lord, "Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken anything from any man by false accusation, I restore to him fourfold." 9 And Jesus said unto him,

"This day is salvation come to this house, in that he also is a son of Abraham. 10 For the Son of Man is come to seek and to save that which was lost."

Titus 2:1-10

1 But speak thou the things which befit sound doctrine: 2 that the older men be sober, serious, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience; 3 the older women likewise, that they be in behavior as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things, 4 that they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, 5 to be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the Word of God be not blasphemed.

6 Likewise exhort the young men to be soberminded, 7 in all things showing thyself to be a pattern of good works; in doctrine showing uncorruptness, seriousness, sincerity, 8 sound speech which cannot be condemned, that he that is of a contrary mind may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you.

9 Exhort servants to be obedient unto their own masters, and to please them well in all things, not gainsaying, 10 not purloining, but showing all good fidelity, that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Savior in all things.

Isaiah 66:1-2, 5-16

1 Thus saith the LORD, "The heaven is My throne,
and the earth is My footstool.
Where is the house that ye build unto Me?
And where is the place of My rest?
2 For all those things hath Mine hand made,
and all those things have been," saith the LORD.
"But to this man will I look:
even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at My word.

5 Hear the word of the LORD, ye that tremble at His word: "Your brethren that hated you,
that cast you out for My name's sake, said,
'Let the LORD be glorified, when He shall appear to your joy';
and they shall be ashamed."
6 A voice of noise from the city, a voice from the temple,
a voice of the LORD that rendereth recompense to His enemies.

7 "Before she travailed, she brought forth;
before her pain came, she was delivered of a manchild.
8 Who hath heard such a thing?
Who hath seen such things?
Shall the earth be made to bring forth in one day?
Or shall a nation be born at once?
For as soon as Zion travailed,
she brought forth her children.
9 Shall I bring to birth and not cease to bring forth?" saith the LORD.
"Shall I cause to bring forth, and shut the womb?" saith thy God.

10 "Rejoice ye with Jerusalem, and be glad with her, all ye that love her;
rejoice for joy with her, all ye that mourn for her;
11 that ye may suck, and be satisfied with the breasts of her consolations;
that ye may milk out, and be delighted with the abundance of her glory."

12 For thus saith the LORD, "Behold, I will extend peace to her like a river,
and the glory of the Gentiles like a flowing stream;
then shall ye suck, ye shall be borne upon her sides,
and be dandled upon her knees.
13 As one whom his mother comforteth, so will I comfort you;
and ye shall be comforted in Jerusalem.

14 And when ye see this, your heart shall rejoice,
and your bones shall flourish like an herb;
and the hand of the LORD shall be known toward His servants,
and His indignation toward His enemies.
15 For behold, the LORD will come with fire,
and with His chariots like a whirlwind,
to render His anger with fury
and His rebuke with flames of fire.
16 For by fire and by His sword will the LORD plead with all flesh;
and the slain of the LORD shall be many.

Words of Wisdom - Proverbs 23:9

Speak not to the ears of a fool,
for he will despise the wisdom of thy words.
