Scripture Reading for
The Lectionary According to the Common Calendar
39 And He came out and went, as He was wont, to the Mount of Olives; and His disciples also followed Him. 40 And when He was at the place, He said unto them,
41 And He was withdrawn from them about a stone's cast, and kneeled down and prayed, 42 saying,
43 And there appeared an angel unto Him from Heaven, strengthening Him. 44 And being in agony, He prayed more earnestly, and His sweat was, as it were, great drops of blood falling down to the ground. 45 And when He rose up from prayer and had come to His disciples, He found them sleeping for sorrow. 46 And He said unto them,
47 And while He yet spoke, behold, a multitude; and he that was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them and drew near unto Jesus to kiss Him. 48 But Jesus said unto him,
49 When those who were about Him saw what would follow, they said unto Him, "Lord, shall we smite with the sword?" 50 And one of them smote the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear. 51 And Jesus answered and said,
And He touched his ear and healed him. 52 Then Jesus said unto the chief priests and captains of the temple and the elders, who had come to Him,
1 For the law, having a shadow of the good things to come and not the very image of those things, can never, with those sacrifices which they offered continually year by year, make those who come unto it perfect. 2 For then would not sacrifices have ceased to be offered? For worshipers once purged should have had no more consciousness of sins. 3 But in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sins every year, 4 for it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins. 5 Therefore when He cometh into the world, He saith,
8 Above when He said, "Sacrifice and offering and burnt offerings, and offering for sin Thou wouldest not have, neither hadst pleasure therein" (which are offered in accordance with the law), 9 then said He, "Lo, I come to do Thy will, O God," He taketh away the first, that He may establish the second. 10 By this will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. 11 And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering time and again the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. 12 But this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down at the right hand of God, 13 from henceforth to wait until His enemies be made His footstool. 14 For by one offering He hath perfected for ever those who are sanctified. 15 Of this the Holy Ghost also is a witness to us; for after He had said before,
18 Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin.
Jeremiah 29:1, 4-14
1 Now these are the words of the letter that Jeremiah the prophet sent from Jerusalem unto the residue of the elders who were carried away captives, and to the priests, and to the prophets, and to all the people whom Nebuchadnezzar had carried away captive from Jerusalem to Babylon
4 "Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, unto all who are carried away captives, whom I have caused to be carried away from Jerusalem unto Babylon: 5 Build ye houses and dwell in them, and plant gardens and eat the fruit of them. 6 Take ye wives and beget sons and daughters, and take wives for your sons and give your daughters to husbands, that they may bear sons and daughters, that ye may be increased there, and not diminished. 7 And seek the peace of the city whither I have caused you to be carried away captives, and pray unto the LORD for it; for in the peace thereof shall ye have peace. 8 For thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Let not your prophets and your diviners who are in the midst of you deceive you, neither hearken to your dreams which ye cause to be dreamed. 9 For they prophesy falsely unto you in My name: I have not sent them, saith the LORD.
10 "For thus saith the LORD: That after seventy years are accomplished at Babylon, I will visit you and perform My good word toward you, causing you to return to this place. 11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you an expected end. 12 Then shall ye call upon Me, and ye shall go and pray unto Me and I will hearken unto you. 13 And ye shall seek Me and find Me when ye shall search for Me with all your heart. 14 And I will be found by you, saith the LORD, and I will return you from captivity, and I will gather you from all the nations and from all the places whither I have driven you, saith the LORD; and I will bring you back into the place from whence I caused you to be carried away captive.
