The Lectionary
According to the Christian Seasons
Micah 5:1-5
1 Now gather thyself in troops, O daughter of troops; he
hath laid siege against us;
they shall smite the judge of Israel with a rod upon the cheek.
2 "But thou, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though thou be
little among the thousands of Judah,
yet out of thee shall come forth unto Me He that is to be ruler in Israel,
whose goings forth have been from of old,
from everlasting."
3 Therefore will He give them up, until the time that she
who travaileth hath brought forth;
then the remnant of His brethren shall return unto the children of Israel.
4 And He shall stand and feed them in the strength of the LORD, in the majesty of the name of the LORD His God. And they shall abide; for now shall He be great unto the ends of the earth. 5 And this Man shall be the peace when the Assyrian shall come into our land; and when he shall tread in our palaces, then shall we raise against him seven shepherds and eight princes of men.
Psalm 12:1-6
1 Help, LORD, for the godly man ceaseth;
for the faithful fail from among the children of men.
2 They speak vanity every one with his neighbor;
with flattering lips and with a double heart do they speak.
3 The LORD shall cut off all flattering lips,
and the tongue that speaketh proud things,
4 who have said, "With our tongue, we will prevail; our lips
are our own;
who is lord over us?"
5 "For the oppression of the poor, for the
sighing of the needy,
now will I arise," saith the LORD; "I will set him in
safety from him that puffeth at him."
6 The words of the LORD are pure words,
as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.
Isaiah 61:10
10 I will greatly rejoice in the LORD; my soul shall be joyful in my God. For He hath clothed me with the garments of salvation; He hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorneth herself with her jewels.
Matthew 1
1 The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the Son of David,
the Son of Abraham.
2 Abraham begot Isaac, and Isaac begot Jacob, and Jacob begot
Judah and his brethren. 3 And Judah begot Perez and Zerah by Tamar, and Perez
begot Hezron, and Hezron begot Aram, 4 and Aram begot Aminadab, and Aminadab
begot Nahshon, and Nahshon begot Salmon, 5 and Salmon begot Boaz by Rahab, and
Boaz begot Obed by Ruth, and Obed begot Jesse, 6 and Jesse begot David the king.
And David the king begot Solomon by her that had been the wife
of Uriah, 7 and Solomon begot Rehoboam, and Rehoboam begot Abijah, and Abijah
begot Asa, 8 and Asa begot Jehoshaphat, and Jehoshaphat begot Joram, and Joram
begot Uzziah, 9 and Uzziah begot Jotham, and Jotham begot Ahaz, and Ahaz begot
Hezekiah, 10 and Hezekiah begot Manasseh, and Manasseh begot Amon, and Amon
begot Josiah, 11 and Josiah begot Jechonias and his brethren, about the time
they were carried away to Babylon.
12 And after they were brought to Babylon, Jechonias begot
Salathiel, and Salathiel begot Zerubbabel, 13 and Zerubbabel begot Abiud, and
Abiud begot Eliakim, and Eliakim begot Azor, 14 and Azor begot Zadok, and Zadok
begot Achim, and Achim begot Eliud, 15 and Eliud begot Eleazar, and Eleazar
begot Matthan, and Matthan begot Jacob, 16 and Jacob begot Joseph, the husband
of Mary of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.
17 So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen
generations, and from David until the carrying away into Babylon are fourteen
generations, and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ are fourteen
generations.
18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was in this way: When His
mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found
with child of the Holy Ghost. 19 And Joseph her husband, being a just man and
not willing to make her a public example, was minded to put her away privily. 20
But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared
unto him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take
unto thee Mary thy wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy
Ghost. 21 And she shall bring forth a Son, and thou shalt call His name JESUS,
for He shall save His people from their sins."
22 Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was
spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, 23 "Behold, a virgin shall be
with child and shall bring forth a Son, and they shall call His name
Emmanuel" (which being interpreted is, "God with us").
24 Then Joseph, being raised from sleep, did as the angel of the
Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife, 25 and knew her not until she
had brought forth her firstborn Son. And he called His name JESUS.
Words of Wisdom - Wisdom of Solomon 15:7
For the potter, tempering soft earth, fashioneth every vessel with much
labor for our service;
yea, of the same clay he maketh both the vessels that serve for clean uses,
and likewise also all such as serve to the contrary;
but what is the use of either sort
the potter himself is the judge.
Jesus Speaks
Morals & Values - Matthew 20:1-15a
"For the
Kingdom of Heaven is like unto a man that is a householder, who went
out early in the morning to hire laborers into his vineyard. And
when he had agreed with the laborers for a penny a day, he sent them
into his vineyard. And he went out about the third hour and saw
others standing idle in the marketplace, and said unto them, 'Go ye
also into the vineyard, and whatsoever is right I will give you.'
And they went their way. Again he went out about the sixth and the
ninth hour and did likewise. And about the eleventh hour he went out
and found others standing idle, and said unto them, 'Why stand ye
here all the day idle?' They said unto him, 'Because no man hath
hired us.' He said unto them, 'Go ye also into the vineyard, and
whatsoever is right, that shall ye receive.'
So when evening had
come, the lord of the vineyard said unto his steward, 'Call the laborers and
give them their hire, beginning from the last unto the first.' And when they
came that were hired about the eleventh hour, they received every man a penny.
But when the first came, they supposed they should have received more; and
they likewise received every man a penny. And when they had received it,
they murmured against the master of the house, saying, 'These last have
wrought but one hour, and thou hast made them equal unto us who have
borne the burden and the heat of the day.' But he answered one of them and said,
'Friend, I do thee no wrong. Didst thou not agree with me for a penny? Take
that which is thine and go thy way. I will give unto this last, even as unto
thee. Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with mine own?
