The Lectionary
According to the Christian Seasons
1 Corinthians 8
1 Now concerning things offered unto idols: We know that we all
have knowledge. Knowledge puffeth up, but charity edifieth. 2 And if any man
think that he knoweth anything, he knoweth nothing yet as he ought to know. 3
But if any man love God, the same is known by Him.
4 Concerning therefore the eating of those things that are
offered in sacrifice unto idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world,
and that there is no other God but One. 5 For though there be what are called
"gods," whether in heaven or on earth (as there are many
"gods" and many "lords"), 6 yet to us there is but one God,
the Father, from whom are all things, and we in Him, and one Lord Jesus Christ
by whom are all things, and we by Him. 7 However, there is not in every man that
knowledge; for some, with conscience of the idol until this hour, eat it as a
thing offered unto an idol, and their conscience, being weak, is defiled. 8 But
meat commendeth us not to God, for neither are we the better if we eat, nor are
we the worse if we eat not. 9 But take heed lest by any means this liberty of
yours become a stumbling block to those who are weak. 10 For if any man see
thee, who hast knowledge, sitting at meat in the idol's temple, shall not the
conscience of him who is weak be emboldened to eat those things which are
offered to idols, 11 and through thy knowledge shall the weak brother perish,
for whom Christ died? 12 For when ye sin so against the brethren and wound their
weak conscience, ye sin against Christ. 13 Therefore, if meat make my brother to
offend, I will eat no flesh while the world standeth, lest I make my brother to
offend.
Psalm 139
1 O LORD, Thou hast searched me and known me.
2 Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising; Thou understandest
my thought afar off.
3 Thou compassest my path and my lying down,
and art acquainted with all my ways.
4 For there is not a word on my tongue,
but lo, O LORD, Thou knowest it altogether.
5 Thou hast beset me behind and before,
and laid Thine hand upon me.
6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me;
it is high, I cannot attain unto it.
7 Whither shall I go from Thy Spirit?
Or whither shall I flee from Thy presence?
8 If I ascend up into heaven, Thou art there;
if I make my bed in hell, behold, Thou art there.
9 If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost
parts of the sea,
10 even there shall Thy hand lead me, and Thy right hand shall hold
me.
11 If I say, "Surely the darkness shall cover me,"
even the night shall be light about me.
12 Yea, the darkness hideth not from Thee, but the night shineth as
the day;
the darkness and the light are both alike to Thee.
13 For Thou hast possessed my reins;
Thou hast covered me in my mother's womb.
14 I will praise Thee, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
marvelous are Thy works, and that my soul knoweth right well.
15 My substance was not hid from Thee when I was made in secret,
and intricately wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.
16 Thine eyes did see my substance,
yet being imperfect;
and in Thy book all my members were written,
which in continuity were fashioned, when as yet there were none of
them.
17 How precious also are Thy thoughts unto me, O
God!
How great is the sum of them!
18 If I should count them, they are more in number than the sand;
when I awake, I am still with Thee.
19 Surely, Thou wilt slay the wicked, O God.
Depart from me therefore, ye bloody men.
20 For they speak against Thee wickedly,
and Thine enemies take Thy name in vain.
21 Do I not hate them, O LORD, that hate Thee?
And am I not grieved with those that rise up against Thee?
22 I hate them with perfect hatred;
I count them mine enemies.
23 Search me, O God, and know my heart;
try me, and know my thoughts.
24 And see if there be any wicked way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting.
Words of Worship - 1 John 4:12
No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth
in us, and His love is perfected in us.
Luke 6:27-38
27 "But I say unto you that hear: Love
your enemies, do good to them that hate you. 28 Bless them that curse you, and
pray for them that despitefully use you. 29 And unto him that smiteth thee on
the one cheek, offer also the other; and him that taketh away thy cloak,
forbid not to take thy coat also. 30 Give to every man that asketh of thee;
and of him that taketh away thy goods, ask them not back. 31 And as ye would
that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise. 32 For if ye love them
that love you, what thanks have ye? For sinners also love those that love
them. 33 And if ye do good to them that do good to you, what thanks have ye?
For sinners also do even the same. 34 And if ye lend to them from whom ye hope
to receive, what thanks have ye? For sinners also lend to sinners, to receive
as much again. 35 But love ye your enemies, and do good and lend, hoping for
nothing in return; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the
children of the Highest; for He is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil.
36 Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful.
37 "Judge not, and ye shall not be
judged. Condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned. Forgive, and ye shall be
forgiven. 38 Give, and it shall be given unto you: good measure, pressed down
and shaken together and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with
the same measure that ye mete, therewith it shall be measured to you
again."
Words of Wisdom - Proverbs 26:11
As a dog returneth to his vomit,
so a fool returneth to his folly.
Jesus Speaks
Morals & Values - Matthew 20:15b-16
Is thine eye
evil, because I am good?' So the last shall be first, and the first last.
For many are called, but few are chosen."
